Kate Daniels spin-offs (Magic Bites, 2007 — not Gunmetal Magic)

The Kate Daniels novels are Atlanta, Kate’s point of view, Magic Bites through Magic Triumphs. Andrea, Hugh, and Julie each have a book that looks like a fresh series if you meet it in a shop. The authors’ release schedule puts those books in the middle or after the end. This page is that placement. It does not reprint all ten Kate novels.

Hidden Legacy, Innkeeper, and The Edge are different Andrews shelves.

Where the other novels sit

Read the years with the notes, not as a sort. Blood Heir was published in 2021. The authors’ chronological schedule still places it after Magic Tides and Magic Claims (both 2023). Publication order and their story order disagree on that one book. House rule: follow the author schedule for Julie. Do not read Blood Heir between Magic Triumphs and Magic Tides just because the copyright page is earlier. And do not start on it.

Gunmetal Magic and Iron and Magic match publication and the schedule. Gunmetal Magic is not Kate 5.5 you must own, and it is a poor place to meet the world. Iron and Magic is Hugh after you already know him from the Kate novels. The schedule marks it as his book one. There was no second Hugh novel on that list when this page was checked.

Novellas that look like extra book ones

Magic Mourns is an Andrea novella. The schedule puts it after Magic Strikes and before Magic Bleeds. It is not a start.

Magic Gifts is a Kate novella. In print it was packaged with Gunmetal Magic. Buying Gunmetal Magic does not make Andrea’s novel into Kate book one, and it does not replace Magic Bites.

Other shorts (Magic Dreams, Magic Steals, Magic Stars, Sanctuary, and the pieces in Small Magics) interleave on the author list. A first read can ignore them. Insert one when the schedule puts it after a book you have already read.

The King of Fire is a Julie short that also appears with Blood Heir. It is not a prequel door.

What “after Magic Slays” means

The Kate Daniels guide has the ten Atlanta novels and the Wilmington pair in Kate’s order. Use it for the spine. Use this page when the book in your hand is not narrated by Kate.

House rule: Magic Bites first. Gunmetal Magic only after Magic Slays. Iron and Magic only after Magic Binds. Blood Heir only after Magic Claims. None of those three is required to finish Kate’s ten.

Common mistakes

• Starting with Gunmetal Magic because Andrea is on the cover and the number 1 belongs to her book, not to the world.
• Starting with Blood Heir because Julie’s hardcover looks like a reboot.
• Starting with Iron and Magic because Hugh’s book says book one.
• Reading Blood Heir in 2021 publication order, ahead of Wilmington, against the author schedule.
• Treating Hidden Legacy (Burn for Me) as Kate book 11.

What to read next

1. Kate Daniels (Ilona Andrews) — The actual spine. Magic Bites through Magic Triumphs, then Wilmington if you want the later city.
2. Mercy Thompson (Patricia Briggs) — If you want another long urban-fantasy job with a spin-off that looks optional.
3. The Dresden Files (Jim Butcher) — If you want the other long supernatural-case run.
4. Fever (Karen Marie Moning) — If a later narrator book looked like a new series and you want that problem on a different shelf.
5. Stop after Magic Bites if you are still deciding. The spin-offs can wait until the spine has a reason to branch.

Can I start with Gunmetal Magic?
No. Andrea’s novel assumes Magic Slays already happened. Start at Magic Bites (2007).

Where does Blood Heir go?
After Magic Triumphs, Magic Tides, and Magic Claims, on the author schedule. Not first. Not between Magic Triumphs and Magic Tides.

Where does Iron and Magic go?
After Magic Binds and before Magic Triumphs. Hugh’s book one is not the world’s book one.

Do I need the spin-offs to finish Kate’s series?
No. Magic Triumphs ends the Atlanta run without them.
