Start Tolkien with The Hobbit, then The Lord of the Rings. The Silmarillion is later First Age history — a reread or lore project, not an on-ramp.

The Hobbit is the first published Middle-earth novel (1937). Fellowship assumes that tone. Do not start with The Silmarillion. Do not start in The Two Towers because a shop sold it as a paperback.
Publication path for a first read
The Hobbit, then The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King. Some printings bind the three LotR volumes as one book. That is still the same novel. Do not start in the middle.
You can start at Fellowship. You will miss the tone it is in conversation with. The Hobbit is short. This house reads it first.
The Jackson films are a cousin. Film order is close for the main quest and is not a reason to skip the Hobbit book.
Silmarillion is earlier in the calendar, later on the shelf
The Silmarillion was assembled after Tolkien’s death. Chronological charts put it (and sometimes The Children of Húrin) before The Hobbit. That is a reread or a lore project. For a first read it is the wrong temperature: a mythic summary written for people who already care why the later quest is expensive.
House rule: finish Hobbit and LotR. If you still want the First Age, open The Silmarillion. If you bounce, come back later. Do not “prepare” for Frodo by reading the Ainulindalë first.
