The first of the major novels. Read those in publication order. Lord John sits around Voyager in story time. Do not start there. The show is not a substitute for book one.
The first major novel
Gabaldon’s chronology page numbers the major novels and says they should be read in order. Outlander (1991) is the first. Dragonfly in Amber is second. Voyager is third. Lord John books become safe to visit after Voyager. They are not an on-ramp.
Nine major novels are out. A tenth, A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out, is listed as forthcoming. Do not wait for it before opening book one.
The show is a cousin
Season order follows the early novels more closely than most adaptations, then compresses. It is still not a substitute for Outlander.
