Dune books in order: start with Dune (1965). Read Frank Herbert’s six first. Do not start with a Prelude to Dune prequel, with Dune Messiah because you saw the second film, or with a chronological chart that begins at the Butlerian Jihad.
Book one is the 1965 novel
Publication order. There is no contested sequence inside Frank Herbert’s six. You can stop after Dune and have read a novel. You can stop after Chapterhouse: Dune and have read the series Herbert kept writing.
The Villeneuve films cover Dune and then Dune Messiah. They are cousins. Film part two is not a license to skip the 1965 novel.
