It is book one of fourteen. Do not start with New Spring. The last three novels are the ending, not an optional Sanderson trilogy. Pace it as a long finished series, not a race.
Start at book one, on purpose
There is no honest “start at book four because the prologue is long.” The prologue is a door. The first book is still the first book. Robert Jordan wrote 1–11. Brandon Sanderson finished 12–14 from Jordan’s notes. Those three are Wheel of Time. They are not a separate series you can detach and read first.
The series is complete. You do not wait for a shorter on-ramp. This is a long series on purpose.
How to pace it without a syllabus
Read in publication order. Take breaks between books if you need them; do not “fix” the middle by skipping to the Sanderson jackets. Companion encyclopedias leak. The television series is a cousin that compresses early books. Season order is not book order.
If you want the prequel at all, put New Spring after Lord of Chaos, or after book 14. Reading it first hands you names and outcomes the opening novel is designed to discover.
