Honorverse reading order
Honorverse reading order: start with On Basilisk Station and the main Honor novels. Saganami, Crown of Slaves, anthologies, and the YA prequels are optional later — not book one.

Short answer · Start here
On Basilisk Station
It is Honor Harrington book one (1993). Read the main Honor novels in publication order. The Shadow of Saganami, Crown of Slaves, the Worlds of Honor anthologies, and the Stephanie Harrington YA books are later, optional widening — not a 40-title first homework list.
The Honorverse is several shelves that share a navy. First-time readers do not need the combined spreadsheet. They need Honor’s own fourteen, in order, until they know whether they want the rest of the war.
Weber has said publication order across the whole universe is safe. That is true and too much object for a first visit. This house gives you the Honor path, then labels the branches.
Safehold is a different Weber epic. It is not Honorverse 0.
Main Honor novels — first path

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1993 | Start here. | Amazon search for On Basilisk Station | |
| 2 | 1993 | Amazon search for The Honor of the Queen | ||
| 3 | 1994 | Amazon search for The Short Victorious War | ||
| 4 | 1994 | Amazon search for Field of Dishonor | ||
| 5 | 1995 | Amazon search for Flag in Exile | ||
| 6 | 1996 | Amazon search for Honor Among Enemies | ||
| 7 | 1997 | Amazon search for In Enemy Hands | ||
| 8 | 1998 | Amazon search for Echoes of Honor | ||
| 9 | 2000 | Amazon search for Ashes of Victory | ||
| 10 | 2002 | From here the side series start to matter if you want the wider war. | Amazon search for War of Honor | |
| 11 | 2005 | Amazon search for At All Costs | ||
| 12 | 2010 | Amazon search for Mission of Honor | ||
| 13 | 2012 | Amazon search for A Rising Thunder | ||
| 14 | 2018 | Closes Honor’s main numbered run. | Amazon search for Uncompromising Honor |
Read these fourteen in this order. There is no honest mid-series start. You can stop after Ashes of Victory if you only wanted Honor’s early career. You will not have the later war.
Toll of Honor — later-published side novel
| Title | Year | Notes | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Later Honor novel. Sits back in the Pavel Young stretch. Not Uncompromising Honor 2, and not book one. | Amazon search for Toll of Honor |
Weber’s site files this with the Honor list. Story time is much earlier than Uncompromising Honor. House rule: after you already like Honor, not as book 15 of a first pass, and not as a door.
Saganami and Crown of Slaves — optional later
These are the two adult branches most readers mean by “the rest of the Honorverse.” They share the later war with Honor’s own books. They are not required before On Basilisk Station. They become useful around War of Honor / At All Costs if you want every fleet.
| Title | Year | Notes | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2003 | Wages of Sin / Crown of Slaves branch, with Eric Flint. After you like Honor. Not a YA door. | Amazon search for Crown of Slaves | |
| 2004 | Saganami Island branch. New officers, later war. Not Honor 11. | Amazon search for The Shadow of Saganami | |
| 2009 | Amazon search for Torch of Freedom | ||
| 2009 | Amazon search for Storm from the Shadows | ||
| 2013 | Amazon search for Shadow of Freedom | ||
| 2014 | Amazon search for Cauldron of Ghosts | ||
| 2016 | Amazon search for Shadow of Victory | ||
| 2021 | Amazon search for To End in Fire |
House rule: Honor novels first. If the wider war is the hook, add Crown of Slaves and The Shadow of Saganami after War of Honor (or after you finish Honor’s fourteen), then continue each branch in publication order. Do not start the Honorverse on Saganami because it says “book one.”
Anthologies and YA — later still
Worlds of Honor anthologies (More Than Honor, Worlds of Honor, Changer of Worlds, The Service of the Sword, In Fire Forged, Beginnings, What Price Victory?) mix short Honorverse fiction. Some introduce names the later novels keep. They are not a hidden novel column. Optional after you already care.
Stephanie Harrington YA / Star Kingdom (with Jane Lindskold):
| Title | Year | Notes | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2011 | YA. Honor’s ancestor, treecats. Optional later. Not Basilisk 0. | Amazon search for A Beautiful Friendship | |
| 2012 | Amazon search for Fire Season | ||
| 2013 | Amazon search for Treecat Wars | ||
| 2022 | Amazon search for A New Clan | ||
| Friends Indeed | 2025 | Amazon search for Friends Indeed |
Manticore Ascendant (A Call to Duty and sequels, with Timothy Zahn) is another prequel branch, Travis Long, centuries before Honor. Same rule: later, if you want navy history. Not book one.
House of Steel is a companion. Not a novel 10.5.
Common mistakes
- Opening a complete Honorverse spreadsheet and postponing On Basilisk Station.
- Starting with A Beautiful Friendship because it is earlier and shorter.
- Starting with The Shadow of Saganami or Crown of Slaves because they are labeled book one of a spin-off.
- Treating Toll of Honor as the continuation of Uncompromising Honor.
- Mixing Safehold into the Manticore column.
What to read next
- Vorkosigan Saga (Lois McMaster Bujold) — If you want another long military-SF family where the earliest-set book is not the door.
- The Expanse (James S. A. Corey) — If you want another finished space-opera run with novellas that look like missing novels.
- The Culture (Iain M. Banks) — If you want another space-opera shelf whose publication order is the honest first path.
- Old Man’s War (John Scalzi) — If you want a shorter military-SF door with sequels that are not a 14-book navy.
- Stop after Ashes of Victory. Honor’s first nine are a complete early-career visit. The later war, Saganami, and Crown of Slaves are a second appetite.
FAQ
Do I need Saganami and Crown of Slaves?
Not for a first Honor visit. They widen the later war. Start them after you like the main novels.
Do I need the anthologies?
No. Optional texture. Some names show up again; the novels still carry Honor.
Is the YA series book one?
No. Stephanie Harrington is centuries earlier. After you already like treecats, or not at all.
Where does Toll of Honor go?
Later-published; earlier in Honor’s calendar. Not the first book, and not the required sequel to Uncompromising Honor.
