The Expanse reading order

James S. A. Corey is Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. The novels are the spine. The shorter fiction is connective tissue, and several pieces are earlier in time than the book that makes them safe.

The nine novels

If you only do one order, do this.

Novellas and shorts

Insert these after the novel they followed into bookstores, or save them all for Memory’s Legion after you finish the novels. Either is honest. Reordering them to “when they happen” is how people get spoiled.

The Last Flight of the Cassandra (2019) is an RPG extra. It is not in the Orbit table of contents for Memory’s Legion. Keep it out of the novel column.

Memory’s Legion

Memory’s Legion (hardcover 2022; Orbit trade paperback 2023) is labeled “The Complete Expanse Story Collection.” The publisher page lists eight pieces, in this print order: Drive; The Butcher of Anderson Station; The Churn; Gods of Risk; The Vital Abyss; Strange Dogs; Auberon; The Sins of Our Fathers.

Use the book as a one-volume cleanup after Leviathan Falls, or as a way to catch novellas you skipped, in the order the collection prints them. Do not use it as book one.

Chronological prequels spoil

Several shorts take place before or alongside early novels. That does not make them on-ramps.

• The Churn is an Amos-beforehand story. Meeting Amos in the novels first is the point.
• The Butcher of Anderson Station fills in a past that the novels already know how to withhold.
• The Vital Abyss runs across years that include events the early novels treat as discoveries. Some official and storefront descriptions tell you whose custody you are in. That is mid-series furniture. We are not quoting those blurbs.
• Drive is historically early and still a poor first impression of the series voice.

If a chart on the internet says “true chronological order,” treat it as a reread toy. First read: publication order.

Common mistakes

• Starting with The Churn or Drive “because they are first.”
• Reading Memory’s Legion before Leviathan Wakes.
• Treating The Last Flight of the Cassandra as book 8.5.
• Trusting a Vital Abyss storefront paragraph.
• Reading The Vital Abyss before Cibola Burn because a timeline chart said so.

What to read next

1. The Murderbot Diaries (Martha Wells) — If you want a smaller camera after nine books of system politics: one SecUnit, contracts, and media as coping.
2. Red Rising (Pierce Brown) — If you want another solar-system class war, with the warning that book four is a second argument, not a victory lap.

Do I have to read the novellas?
No. They add character history and a few bridges. The nine novels close the series.

Is the show a substitute?
No. It is a cousin. Characters and late-plot choices diverge.

Where does Memory’s Legion go?
After Leviathan Falls, unless you are interleaving shorts as they were published.

Is The Last Flight of the Cassandra in Memory’s Legion?
