Why arc-first exists
Each Foreigner trilogy is sold as a semi-encapsulated political problem. Cherryh’s universe page says you may enjoy tracking down Foreigner and starting at the beginning, and that arc-first is safe. That is permission, not a reason to open Defiance cold.
The slow colonial opening inside Foreigner is part of book one, not a separate prequel you must buy first.
