Foreigner reading order (Foreigner, 1994)

Long first-contact diplomacy, sold as encapsulated trilogy arcs. Cherryh’s own site: start at the beginning if you can; arc-first is allowed. Publication order across the arcs is the path that keeps Bren’s career from arriving as footnotes.

The opening of Foreigner includes early colonial history before Bren’s present. Cherryh has said to be patient with those chapters. They are not a separate prequel novel.

Contested skip, labeled: Cherryh allows the first book of a later arc as an entry. House rule: Foreigner first. Arc-first is for readers who already know they want a later political problem, not for “where do I start Foreigner.”

Self-published short prequels (Deliberations, Invitations) are optional extras. Not book one.

Alliance-Union, Chanur, and Finisterre are other Cherryh shelves. They are not Foreigner.

Common mistakes

• Starting with Precursor or Destroyer because “each trilogy stands alone.”
• Starting with Defiance because it is the newest.
• Skipping the slow opening of Foreigner and calling the series unfinished history.
• Mixing Chanur or Downbelow Station into the Foreigner numbered list.

What to read next

Cherryh says yes. This house still starts at Foreigner.

No. It assumes decades of Bren.

Is the series finished?
Arc 8 is incomplete as of this page. Arcs 1–7 are complete three-book runs.
