Asimov Foundation reading order: start with Foundation (1951), not Prelude. Publication first; chronological charts that open with the prequels are a reread.

Short answer · Start here
Foundation
Foundation reading order: start with Foundation (1951), not the later prequels. Publication first. Chronological charts that open with Prelude to Foundation are a reread, not where to start.
The contested Foundation question is publication versus in-universe time. The 1951 novel is the first published Foundation book, collecting earlier stories. Prelude to Foundation and Forward the Foundation were written for people who already knew the original arc. The Apple TV+ series is a cousin, not book one.

First read — publication path
| # | Title | Year | Notes | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1951 | Start here. | ||
| 2 | 1952 | |||
| 3 | 1953 | Closes the original trilogy. | ||
| 4 | 1982 | |||
| 5 | 1986 |
Then, if you want the later-written front end:
| Title | Year | Notes | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1988 | Prequel. After the original run for a first read. | ||
| 1993 | Prequel. After Prelude if you continue. |
House rule: original trilogy, then Edge and Earth if you want the 1980s continuation, then the prequels if you still want Hari’s earlier life. Chronological-first is a reread.
The wider “Asimov universe” charts that require I, Robot and the Empire novels before Foundation are optional connective tissue. They are not a Foundation on-ramp. I, Robot is a different door you can open later.
Common mistakes
- Starting with Prelude because it is “first.”
- Using the TV show as a table of contents.
- Treating Foundation and Earth as optional filler you read first because of a cover.
- Waiting for a new streaming season before opening 1951.
What to read next
- Dune (Frank Herbert) — If you want another dynastic SF shelf with prequels that should stay prequels.
- Hyperion Cantos (Dan Simmons) — If you want another finished (then continued) literary space-opera argument.
- The Culture (Iain M. Banks) — If you want another SF shelf that is really several doors, not one fake chronology.
- The Expanse (James S. A. Corey) — If you want a modern finished novel run with a correct first book. Short door: where to start The Expanse.
- I, Robot (Isaac Asimov) — If you want the other famous Asimov door, as itself.

Should I read Prelude to Foundation first?
No. It is later-published earlier time, written for people who already knew the original trilogy.
Do I need I, Robot or the Empire novels first?
No. Those are other Asimov doors. They are not a Foundation on-ramp.
Is the Apple TV+ show a substitute?
