The Way of Shadows

It is book one of the 2008 trilogy. Read Shadow’s Edge and Beyond the Shadows next. Perfect Shadow is a later-published Durzo prequel. Open it first and you spend the trilogy already knowing what the books are built to withhold.

Three novels issued months apart, then a novella, then a much later Kylar book. Publication order is the first-read path. The trilogy was written as one job. Do not hop.

Lightbringer is a different Weeks shelf. It is not Night Angel 0, and Night Angel is not Lightbringer homework. If you like the writer more than this particular assassin, that five is the usual next Weeks door.

The trilogy

Read them in this order. There is no honest mid-trilogy start.

Perfect Shadow — later, not first

Perfect ShadowNovella2011Durzo prequel. After the trilogy. Spoils if first.Amazon search for Perfect Shadow

Contested order, labeled: chronology puts Perfect Shadow before The Way of Shadows. Retail and some “complete Night Angel” lists file it as book 0. House rule: after Beyond the Shadows. It is a reward for already knowing Durzo. Taken first, it answers the trilogy in advance.

I, Night Angel is a short Weeks extra around the same shelf. Optional. Not a second novella you must finish before book two.

Night Angel Nemesis — after, not instead

Night Angel Nemesis2023Kylar Chronicles, years later. After the trilogy. Not a new book one.Amazon search for Night Angel Nemesis

Nemesis is the start of a later Kylar sequence, not a reboot. It assumes the settlement of Beyond the Shadows. Do not start here because it is the recent hardcover.

Path to Lightbringer

Weeks wrote Lightbringer between the original Night Angel three and Nemesis. The five Lightbringer novels are a finished, separate argument. You do not need Night Angel first. You do not need Lightbringer to finish Kylar.

House rule: trilogy, then Perfect Shadow if you want Durzo’s earlier name, then Nemesis if you want more Kylar. If the first three were not for you, skip the extras and use the Lightbringer guide as a different Weeks door.

The graphic novel of The Way of Shadows is an adaptation. It is not Night Angel 0.5.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with Perfect Shadow because it is shorter, earlier, or labeled 0.5.
  • Starting with Night Angel Nemesis because it is the new one.
  • Treating Lightbringer as a sequel, or Night Angel as Lightbringer preamble.
  • Stopping after The Way of Shadows because someone said book one is “just the apprentice years.” The three are one arc.
  1. Lightbringer (Brent Weeks) — If you want the later, finished Weeks epic. Different world. Start at The Black Prism.
  2. Powder Mage (Brian McClellan) — If you want another finished magic-and-war run with a sequel trilogy that looks like a new book one.
  3. The First Law (Joe Abercrombie) — If you want another grim street about what a skilled killer costs the people around him.
  4. Mistborn Era 1 (Brandon Sanderson) — If you want another complete magic-system three before anyone mentions a second era.
  5. Stop after Beyond the Shadows. The original three are a complete visit. Nemesis is a later appetite.

FAQ

Perfect Shadow first?
No. After the trilogy. It spoils if you use it as a door.

Do I need Night Angel before Lightbringer?
No.

Is Nemesis a fourth Night Angel novel?
It is a later Kylar book, start of a new sequence. Read it after the trilogy, not instead of it.

Can I start at book two?
No.
