Practical Magic books in order

Short version of the fork: Practical Magic: publication or chronological?. This page is both numberings, labeled.

Four novels. Two honest paths. Hoffman’s own site says it is your choice: written order, or story-time order that begins in the 1600s. Amazon and many “complete series” widgets prefer chronology, which makes Magic Lessons look like book one.

House rule: publication first. Chronology is allowed, and it is not a trap on the scale of a spoiler-heavy assassin origin. It is still a different door: you meet Maria, then Franny and Jet, then Sally and Gillian. Publication lets the 1995 novel be a novel, not episode three.

The Invisible Hour (2023) is a separate Hoffman book. It is not Practical Magic 5.

Publication order — first read

The 1998 film is a cousin. It is not a reason to skip the later novels, and it is not a reason to start with Magic Lessons.

Chronological order — labeled, not required

Hoffman lists this path on her series page:

Contested order, labeled: Hoffman allows either. Chronology is coherent. Publication is how the Owens curse was met. This house uses publication so Practical Magic is not homework you postpone for two prequels.

Common mistakes

• Starting with Magic Lessons because Amazon numbered the family tree as a tetralogy from Maria forward.
• Starting with The Book of Magic because it is the last hardcover.
• Treating The Invisible Hour as Practical Magic 5.
• Waiting to “do them in order” until you have decided which order, and then reading none of them.

What to read next

1. All Souls (Deborah Harkness) — If you want another witch-family street where the later books assume the first discovery.
2. Winternight (Katherine Arden) — If you want another finished folk-magic three with a correct first book.
3. Outlander (Diana Gabaldon) — If the long family time-span was the hook, and you need a first novel that is actually book one.
4. Fever (Karen Marie Moning) — If you want another supernatural street whose later door looks like a new series.
5. Stop after Practical Magic. It was a standalone for twenty-two years. The three later books are appetite.

FAQ

Publication or chronological?
Hoffman allows both. This house starts with Practical Magic (1995). Chronology begins with Magic Lessons.

Why does Amazon start with Magic Lessons?
That is story time. It is not a first-read mercy, and it is not a command.

Is the series finished?
The four Owens novels are a complete visit.

Do I need the film first?
No. The book is the door.
