The Bargainer reading order
Bargainer reading order: Rhapsodic, A Strange Hymn, then The Emperor of Evening Stars — that novella sits after book 2, not as book one — then Dark Harmony.

Short answer · Start here
Rhapsodic
It is book one (2016). The Emperor of Evening Stars is Desmond’s novella. Chronologically it covers his earlier life and runs up through book 2. Read it after A Strange Hymn, not as a prequel door.
Four volumes: three Callie novels and one Desmond novella. Publication order is the first-read path, which also happens to be the honest chronological placement for the extra.
Retail lists sometimes file The Emperor of Evening Stars as book 0 or as book 3. Both labels are half true. It was published between books 2 and 3. Story time starts long before Rhapsodic. The last stretch of it sits after A Strange Hymn. That is why “read the prequel first” is the wrong instruction.

House rule: Rhapsodic, A Strange Hymn, The Emperor of Evening Stars, Dark Harmony. Skip the novella if you want; do not move it in front of book one.
Tandem charts that braid Emperor into Rhapsodic chapter by chapter exist. They are a reread toy. The novella was not designed as required dual-POV homework for a first visit.
The complete-series omnibus is the same four books. It is not a fifth title.
Thalassa’s other shelves (Four Horsemen, Bewitched, Fallen World) are different doors. They are not Bargainer 5.
Common mistakes
- Starting with The Emperor of Evening Stars because it is shorter, earlier, or labeled a prequel.
- Reading the novella after Rhapsodic but before A Strange Hymn — the ending of Emperor assumes you have already finished book 2.
- Starting with Dark Harmony.
- Mixing a Horsemen book into the numbered Bargainer column.
What to read next
- Hades x Persephone (Scarlett St. Clair) — If you want another fae-adjacent romance with a second-POV book that looks like a new door.
- From Blood and Ash (Jennifer L. Armentrout) — If you want another long romantasy whose prequel series is not book one.
- ACOTAR (Sarah J. Maas) — If you want the other bargains-and-courts door with a novella that pretends to be a novel.
- The Folk of the Air (Holly Black) — If you want another finished fae-court three with a correct first book.
- Stop after Dark Harmony. The four are a complete visit.
