Shadows of the Apt reading order (Empire in Black and Gold, 2008)

A finished ten. Publication order is the reading order. There is no chronological prequel posing as book one. The trap is the rest of the author: later series, a different fantasy trilogy, and mid-list reprints that look current.

See Children of Time and The Final Architecture if those were the Tchaikovsky shelves you meant. Echoes of the Fall (The Tiger and the Wolf first) is another fantasy trilogy. It is not Apt book 11.

The ten novels

Read them in this order. The cast spreads. Later books assume the earlier wars already happened.

Apt short-story collections exist. They are optional after you already know the ten. They are not book one and they are not required to finish Seal of the Worm.

House rule: Empire in Black and Gold through Seal of the Worm. Stop earlier if you want; do not start later.

Common mistakes

• Starting with Children of Time because it is the Tchaikovsky book a shop puts forward.
• Starting with Shards of Earth for the same reason.
• Starting with The Tiger and the Wolf because it is also Tchaikovsky fantasy.
• Jumping to The Air War or Seal of the Worm because a reprint looks new.
• Treating an Apt short-story collection as book 11 you must read before the ending.
