Short answer · Start here

Children of Time

It is book one (2015). The two sequels are later generations of the same argument. Do not start with Children of Memory. Do not start with Shards of Earth.

A finished trilogy. Publication order is the only path. The Final Architecture (Shards of Earth and on) is a different Tchaikovsky space opera.

The trilogy

Read them in this order. Book two and three assume you already know what book one did to a planet.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with Children of Memory.
  • Mixing in Shards of Earth as book 4.
  • Treating each volume as a standalone because the casts shift.
  1. Bobiverse (Dennis E. Taylor) — If you want another long-timescale tinkering voice, warmer.
  2. Remembrance of Earth’s Past (Cixin Liu) — If you want another civilizational-scale trilogy.
  3. The Murderbot Diaries (Martha Wells) — If you want shorter books about constructed people.
  4. The Final Architecture (Adrian Tchaikovsky) — If you want his other finished space-opera three (Shards of Earth first), as itself.
  5. Shadows of the Apt (Adrian Tchaikovsky) — If you wanted the ten-book fantasy shelf. Empire in Black and Gold (2008) is that book one. Not a sequel here. Short version: Apt or Children of Time?.
