Flesh and Fire is a companion prequel, not a separate door. Armentrout’s FAQ wants release order across both series. Reading all four Ember books first spoils mysteries the Poppy novels are still carrying.
Why Ember is not book one
A Shadow in the Ember is Flesh and Fire 1. It is not From Blood and Ash 0. The author’s FAQ says the two series are meant to be read together in release order, because the prequels explain things the Poppy books are still using as mystery.
Official first insert: after The Crown of Gilded Bones (FBAA 3), before The War of Two Queens. Then the later Ember novels continue to alternate with the later Poppy novels.
What “just read the prequels first” costs
Chronology puts Sera’s four before Poppy. That is a complete Sera visit. It is also how people arrive at From Blood and Ash already holding answers the opening romantasy was designed to withhold. Armentrout calls Flesh and Fire a companion prequel, not a fully separate path.
Visions of Flesh and Blood is a compendium. Optional. Not before A Fire in the Flesh. A Soul of Ash and Blood is a Poppy-side look backward. Not a new door.
