Where to start Discworld
Do not start Discworld at a 41-book spreadsheet. City Watch, Witches, and Death are the usual first streets. Colour of Magic is a different tone.
Short answer
Guards! Guards! — or Equal Rites, or Mort
Discworld is paths, not one numbered epic. City Watch, Witches, and Death are clean first streets. The Colour of Magic is book one of the Disc and a different tone. You do not owe it.
Three usual first streets
City Watch — Guards! Guards! through Snuff. A true sequence. This house often starts people here because the Watch is a character ladder, not a pile of standalones.
Witches — Equal Rites (some readers prefer Wyrd Sisters as a friendlier Granny door). Tiffany sits on that page later, not as book one.
Death — Mort. Short, complete, and not Hogfather first because of the TV film.
You do not need the other streets before you open one.
What “start at book one” means here
The Colour of Magic is the first Discworld novel and the first Rincewind book. You can start there. Early Rincewind is a different temperature from the later city. If it feels like a parody that has not yet become Ankh-Morpork, switch streets; you have not failed the Disc.
Moist von Lipwig (Going Postal) is a later industrial door, cleaner for some modern readers, not a hidden book one.
Full Discworld publication order is a collecting project. Use the publisher list for the 41-book shelf. Do not postpone Guards! Guards! until you own a spreadsheet.
FAQ
Can Discworld be read in any order?
Half true of the Disc. Wrong inside a character line. Watch, Witches, Death, Rincewind, and Moist are sequences.
Do I need Theatre of Cruelty or the picture book?
No. Those notes live on the Watch page.
Is Night Watch a good first Discworld novel?
It is a later Watch book. People call it the best. Start with Guards! Guards!
