Discworld City Watch reading order

You do not need the Witches or Death books first. Those are other streets. The Watch books assume a city that already exists; they do not assume you have read every prior Discworld novel.

If someone told you “Discworld can be read in any order,” they are half right about the series and wrong about this street. The Watch novels are a character ladder. Vimes, Carrot, Angua, and the institution of the Watch change on purpose.

The eight novels

Publication order is the Watch order.

These eight are the spine. Cameos in other Discworld novels (The Truth, Monstrous Regiment, Raising Steam, and others) are optional later rereads, not Watch #9.

Theatre of Cruelty is optional

Theatre of Cruelty is a short Watch story, not a ninth novel.

• In story terms it sits after Guards! Guards! and before Men at Arms.
• It has lived in authorized collections such as A Blink of the Screen, not on the standard novel spine.
• Availability is uneven. Some audiobook groupings invent a “1.5.” That is a catalog convenience, not a Pratchett novel number.
• You can finish all eight novels without it and still have read the City Watch series.

House rule: mention it, do not number it, and do not send people to unofficial copies.

Where’s My Cow? is a picture book inside the Watch’s world. It is not Watch #6.5.

Common mistakes

• Starting with The Colour of Magic because it is “book one.” You can. It is a different tone and a different cast. See Rincewind.
• Reading Night Watch first because people call it the best. It is a later book.
• Stuffing every Vimes cameo into the numbered table.
• Treating Theatre of Cruelty as required homework.
• Using a fan “complete Watch” list that quietly includes the picture book.

What to read next

1. Rivers of London (Ben Aaronovitch) — If you want a working police force in a city that is older and stranger than its paperwork. Magic as an extra jurisdiction, not a chosen-one diploma.
2. The Goblin Emperor (Katherine Addison) — If the pleasure was watching an honest person learn an institution from the inside, without needing another dragon.
3. The Craft Sequence (Max Gladstone) — If Ankh-Morpork’s legal and economic improvising was the hook: gods, contracts, and cities as machines.
4. The First Law (Joe Abercrombie) — If you want another long fantasy street that is really about people trapped inside an institution, with less civic optimism.
5. Jack Reacher (Lee Child) — If you want the copper’s stare without the dragons: cases that look standalone until they are not.

Is City Watch a good Discworld starting point?
Yes. It is one of the usual good ones, alongside Witches and Death. This site starts here because the Watch is a true sequence.

Do I need Theatre of Cruelty?
No.

What about the Watch in other novels?
Let them surprise you after Snuff, or after you start wandering the rest of the Disc.

Should I read by theme or by publication across all Discworld?
For the Watch, publication. For the whole Disc, use a publisher map. We are not turning this page into a 41-book chart.
