Killing Floor

Jack Reacher books in order: publication, starting with Killing Floor (1997). Chronological prequels — The Enemy, The Affair, Night School, The Secret — are mid-run books, not where to start.

The official site says the books can be read in any order, then lists them in the order they were written. For a first read, written order is the honest path: you meet Reacher the way Child introduced him. Do not start with a prequel because it is earlier in his army life. Those books assume you already know the man who got off the bus.

Short version of the order question: Jack Reacher: publication or chronological?. This page is the numbered list.

Andrew Child co-authors from The Sentinel (2020) onward. That is a handoff, not a new series and not a new book one. Chain Reaction is announced for October 2026. It is not on the shelf yet. Do not wait for it before starting.

Publication order

The official Jack Reacher site lists the novels in written order. US title for book 4 is Running Blind; the UK title is The Visitor. Same book.

The “any order” claim, with exceptions

Most Reacher novels are built as a man arriving in a new town. That is why publishers say you can start anywhere. It is half true.

The exceptions are the point of a reading-order page:

  • Prequels in the middle of the list. The Enemy, The Affair, Night School, and The Secret jump backward. Publication order keeps them from becoming accidental book ones.
  • A four-book chain. 61 Hours, Worth Dying For, A Wanted Man, and Never Go Back follow one leftover job. Read those four in order even if you hop around elsewhere.
  • Recurring names. Neagley, the 110th, and a few family facts accumulate. You can follow a standalone plot without them. You will not follow why the plot is expensive.

House rule: publication order for a first pass. Chronological charts that begin with The Enemy or The Secret are reread toys.

Shorts and the screen

No Middle Name (2017) is a short-story collection, including “Too Much Time.” It is not a numbered novel. Optional cleanup after you already like the voice.

The Prime series is a cousin. Season one draws on Killing Floor; later seasons jump. Season order is not book order. The Tom Cruise films are a different cousin.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with The Enemy or The Affair because a “chronological Reacher” list put them first.
  • Treating One Shot as book one because you saw a film.
  • Skipping the 61 Hours chain and wondering why Never Go Back feels mid-conversation.
  • Waiting for Chain Reaction (announced 2026) before opening Killing Floor.
  • Searching only “Child” and picking up a later hardcover as an on-ramp.
  1. Cormoran Strike (Robert Galbraith) — If you want another long investigator run that is really about a partnership accumulating book by book.
  2. James Bond (Ian Fleming) — If you want another long professional run where the films are a cousin franchise, not a contents page. Start at Casino Royale.
  3. Rivers of London (Ben Aaronovitch) — If you want the police job instead of the drifter, in a city that is the case. Short door: where to start Rivers of London.
  4. Mitch Rapp (Vince Flynn) — If you want another long professional run whose origin novel is a mid-list prequel, and whose film starts in the wrong place.
  5. Harry Bosch (Michael Connelly) — If you want another long cop series where publication order is the door and the screen version is a cousin. Start at The Black Echo.

FAQ

Jack Reacher books in order — publication or chronological?
Publication. Start with Killing Floor. Chronological prequels are mid-run books, not book one. Short version: publication or chronological?.

Do I have to read them in order?
For a first pass, yes. For a reread, hop if you want — except the four-book chain and the prequels you should not use as doors.

Can I start with The Enemy or The Affair?
Not for a first read. They jump backward. They assume you already know Reacher.

Which title is book 4?
Running Blind in the US, The Visitor in the UK. Same book.

When did Andrew Child take over?
Co-author from The Sentinel (2020). Still the same numbered run.

Is Exit Strategy a novella?
Penguin has called the 2025 book a Reacher story in a shorter jacket. It is still the latest published volume in the written-order list, not a starting point.

Is the Prime show a substitute?
No. It is an adaptation that jumps. Season order is not book order.
