Flynn wrote ten Rapp novels, then two young-Rapp prequels, then The Last Man. Kyle Mills continued from The Survivor. Don Bentley took over at Capture or Kill. Those are handoffs, not new series and not new book ones.

The official saga page leads with chronology: American Assassin, Kill Shot, Denied Access, then Transfer of Power. That is a reread map and a retailer habit. It is how people skip the book that actually invented the job.

Term Limits (1997) is Flynn’s first novel. It is the same Washington weather. Rapp is not the protagonist. It is not Mitch Rapp book one.

Double Tap is the 2026 young-Rapp volume. Do not wait for it before opening Transfer of Power. It is another origin-era book, not a door.

Contested order, labeled: the estate site and a lot of “complete Rapp” widgets start at American Assassin. The 2017 film does the same. That path is coherent on a reread. For a first read it turns Flynn’s invention of the character into a flash-forward. House rule: publication. The prequels stay in the numbered list where they were published.

Capture or Kill is a Bentley novel that sits earlier in Rapp’s calendar than its 2024 jacket. Still read it where it was published, or after you already like the voice. It is not an on-ramp.

Common mistakes

• Starting with American Assassin because the movie did, or because a chronological list numbered it 1.
• Starting with Denied Access or Kill Shot because they look like origins.
• Treating Term Limits as Mitch Rapp book one.
• Skipping from Flynn to Bentley and missing that Mills wrote a decade in the middle.
• Searching only “Rapp” and picking up the newest hardcover as book one.
