American Assassin is a 2010 origin story. The official site lists chronology from that book. For a first read, start with Transfer of Power (1999), the novel that introduced Rapp.
Why the film is the wrong door
The 2017 movie begins at recruitment. So do a lot of “complete Rapp” widgets, and so does the estate site’s chronology: American Assassin, Kill Shot, Denied Access, then Transfer of Power. That path is a reread map. It is not how Flynn invented the job.
Transfer of Power (1999) is the first published Mitch Rapp novel. Ten Flynn books, then the two young-Rapp prequels, then The Last Man. Kyle Mills and Don Bentley are later handoffs, not new book ones.
What the prequels are for
American Assassin and Kill Shot were published eleventh and twelfth. Denied Access (2025) continues that origin stretch. Double Tap (2026) is another young-Rapp volume. None of them are Mitch Rapp 1 for a first-time reader.
Term Limits is Flynn’s debut. Rapp is not the protagonist. It is not a secret book one either.
