Case Histories
It is book one (2004). Atkinson’s site lists publication order and notes the novels can be read alone but are best enjoyed in that sequence. Do not start on Death at the Sign of the Rook because it is the newest.
Six novels. No prequel. No contested chronology. The trap is treating each Brodie book as a pure standalone because the cases change — the personal stream does not reset.
The BBC Case Histories adaptation covers early books and is not a substitute table of contents for the later novels.

Read them in this order. There is no chronological reorder that improves a first visit.
Common mistakes
- Starting with Big Sky or Death at the Sign of the Rook because those covers are in the window.
- Using the TV series episode order as the novel list for books five and six.
- Mixing Atkinson’s standalones (Life After Life, Shrines of Gaiety) into the Brodie column.
