Laundry Files reading order (Atrocity Archives, 2004)

Lovecraftian bureaucracy in multiple sub-runs: early Bob Howard novels, a mid-series genre remix, then New Management novels after the Laundry itself is wrecked. Stross maintains a story-order chronology on his blog. Publication order of the main novels is enough for a first visit; his alternate doors are labeled below.

Bob Howard novels — house path

Contested doors, labeled: Stross lists The Rhesus Chart and The Nightmare Stacks as safe starts that do not require the early Bob books. House rule: The Atrocity Archives first if you asked for Laundry Files reading order. Use a later door only if you already know you want vampires (Rhesus) or the CASE NIGHTMARE stretch (Stacks).

A Conventional Boy is a short interstitial novel Stross also offers as a taster. Optional. Not a substitute for book one unless you only want a sample.

New Management — after the Laundry breaks

Marketing sometimes numbers New Management as “Laundry Files 10+.” Story-wise the agency is already gone. You can enter at Dead Lies Dreaming if that dystopia is what you want. You will not meet early Bob the same way.

Novellas (Equoid, Escape from Yokai Land, and others) sit between novels on Stross’s chronology. Optional. Do not start there.

Common mistakes

• Starting with Dead Lies Dreaming because Amazon lists it as book 10.
• Starting with The Labyrinth Index.
• Treating every Stross novel (Merchant Princes, Acceleration) as Laundry continuity.
• Skipping The Atrocity Archives after someone said the series “gets good at Rhesus Chart” — allowed as a labeled door, not the default.
