The Black Echo

It is Bosch book one in print (1992). Then the rest of the author’s published Bosch list. The Lincoln Lawyer is Mickey Haller. The Late Show is Renée Ballard. The Poet is Jack McEvoy. None of those is Bosch 1. Short version: where to start Harry Bosch.

Book 1 on Amazon · The Black Echo

Connelly’s series page is the list this page follows: Bosch novels in published order. Haller, Ballard, and McEvoy are parallel shelves that share some books. A “complete Connelly chronology” that braids every cameo is a different project. For a first Bosch visit, stay on the Bosch list and step sideways only at the two doors that change what a later Bosch novel assumes.

The Amazon series Bosch and Bosch: Legacy are cousins. Episode order is not book order.

A further Bosch novel, The Hollow, is announced for November 2026. It was not out when this page was checked. It is not a new door.

Read them in this order. The cases accumulate, and so do the people who later share the books.

Before The Narrows: read The Poet (1996). Connelly marks The Narrows as its sequel.

Before A Darkness More Than Night, if you want McCaleb’s own start: Blood Work (1998) is his book. You can still read the Bosch list without it. You will meet him mid-path.

Before Dark Sacred Night, if you came for Ballard: The Late Show (2017) is her book one. From Dark Sacred Night forward, the Bosch list is also her list.

House path if you only want Bosch: The Black Echo straight through the Bosch table. Detour to The Poet before The Narrows. Detour to The Late Show before Dark Sacred Night if Ballard is why you are here.

House path if you want both Bosch and Haller: Bosch published order, and read each Haller novel when its year falls between Bosch books, starting Haller at The Lincoln Lawyer. Do not open Bosch on The Brass Verdict.

Nightshade (2025) and Ironwood (2026) are the Catalina books (Detective Stilwell). Ironwood also uses Renée Ballard. They are not Bosch novels.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with The Late Show or The Waiting because the recent covers feature Ballard.
  • Starting with The Lincoln Lawyer because of the Netflix series, then treating Haller books as Bosch 1 through 8.
  • Starting with Nine Dragons or The Crossing because a “Bosch and Haller” sticker looked like a fresh start.
  • Skipping The Poet and opening The Narrows cold.
  • Using the TV season list as the novel table of contents.
  1. Jack Reacher (Lee Child) — If you want another long thriller run where publication order is the door and the screen version is a cousin.
  2. Will Trent (Karin Slaughter) — If you want another cop series with a second shelf you should read before the crossover.
  3. Cormoran Strike (Robert Galbraith) — If you want a shorter investigator partnership that still wants book one first.
  4. Gamache (Louise Penny) — If you want another long detective list with one clear front door.
  5. In Death (J. D. Robb) — If you want another long cop list with one publication door and a backlist that looks like a new series. Start at Naked in Death (1995). Short version: where to start In Death. Stop after The Black Echo if you only wanted Bosch’s voice.

The Black Echo (1992).

Do I need The Late Show before Dark Sacred Night?
If you want Ballard’s introduction, yes. If you are only following Bosch, you can meet her when the Bosch list reaches Dark Sacred Night.

What about The Poet?

Is The Waiting the last book?
It is the latest published Bosch novel on the author list when this page was checked. The Hollow was announced and not used as a starting point.
