Freida McFadden path: The Housemaid (2022) is the one true series. Other workplace and locked-room thrillers are clusters, not a secret book one.

The Housemaid — or The Locked Door

If you want the one true series, start with The Housemaid and use the Housemaid guide. If you want a single locked-room standalone, The Locked Door (2019) is an honest first McFadden.

McFadden publishes faster than a reading-order page can moralize. Most of the books that share her name are not a series. Retailers still stack them as if The Teacher were Housemaid 4.

This page is a path, not a fake continuity. Two clusters: the Millie novels, then the workplace / institution standalones people actually search. Earlier medical books exist; they are a different temperature and are not the current on-ramp.

Cluster A — The Housemaid (actual series)

Details and the contested short stay on the Housemaid reading order. Do not read the rest of this page as sequels to Millie.

Cluster B — locked rooms and workplaces (mostly standalones)

These share a method — a job, a house, a ward, a lie — not one heroine. You can read any of them first. The table is a suggested tasting order for someone who wants the current bestsellers without inventing a crossover.

TitleYearNotesShop
The Locked Door2019Standalone. Early locked-room hit.
Never Lie2022Standalone. House with a recording habit.
The Inmate2022Standalone. Prison-hospital job.
Ward D2023Standalone night-ward book. Not Inmate 2, despite the hospital rhyme.
The Teacher2024Standalone. School as workplace.
The Coworker2024Standalone. Office as trap.
The Boyfriend2024Standalone. Dating-app temperature.
The Crash2025Standalone. Later hit; not a secret sequel.
The Tenant2025Standalone. Lodger book.

House rule: pick one standalone. Finish it. If the twist rhythm is what you came for, pick another from the same table. Do not wait for a “McFadden universe” chart. There isn’t one hiding behind the covers.

Want to Know a Secret?, The Devil Wears Scrubs, and other earlier titles are real books. They are not listed here as homework. If you like the medical voice, The Devil Wears Scrubs is a different, older door — not a prequel to Ward D.

What this page is not

It is not a claim that The Teacher spoils The Coworker. It is not a chronological McFadden life story. It is a way to stop buying the wrong “next Housemaid.”

Common mistakes

  • Reading The Coworker as Housemaid 4.
  • Starting with The Housemaid Is Watching because it is newest.
  • Treating Ward D as a required prequel to The Inmate.
  • Making a 15-book publication list and calling it a series.
  1. The Housemaid — If you still have not read the one McFadden run that is actually sequential.
  2. Jack Reacher (Lee Child) — If you want a long numbered list that admits its prequels.
  3. The Thursday Murder Club (Richard Osman) — If you want accumulating people instead of a reset every book.
  4. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder (Holly Jackson) — If you want a short trilogy that really is one case-file argument.
  5. Cormoran Strike (Robert Galbraith) — If the job was the pleasure and you want a partnership that keeps the files.

FAQ

Is there a Freida McFadden reading order?
For The Housemaid, yes. For the rest, no — only a tasting path. Start at The Housemaid (2022).

Should I read them by publication date?
Only if you like watching an author get louder. It will not unlock a shared plot.

Which standalone first if I hated domestic settings?
Try The Inmate or The Teacher. Still one-book machines.

Do I need the early medical novels?
No.
