Mr. Mercedes

Holly is introduced in the first Bill Hodges novel (2014). Holly (2023) is her name on the spine, not her first appearance. Do not start there.

This is the full Holly path: three Hodges novels, then the books where she is the investigator you came for. Publication order matches her working life. There is no chronological reshuffle to argue about.

If you only want the original trilogy, the Bill Hodges page stops at End of Watch. Book one, named: Where to buy Mr. Mercedes.

The path

1Mr. Mercedes2014Hodges 1. Holly enters.
2Finders Keepers2015Hodges 2.
3End of Watch2016Hodges 3. Closes the trilogy.
4The Outsider2018New case. Holly is not on page one. Still fourth.
5If It Bleeds2020Collection. The title novella is the Holly piece.
6HollyDo not start here2023First novel with her name as the title. Not book one.
7Never Flinch2025Latest Holly novel when this page was checked.

House rule: read 1–3 if you want her origin. If you insist on meeting her as lead, the least damaging skip is still not Holly first — it is The Outsider after a blunt warning that you will lack the Hodges years. This house prefers Mr. Mercedes.

If It Bleeds is a four-story collection. You only need the title novella for this path. The other stories are King extras, not secret Holly novels.

The HBO Outsider series and the Mr. Mercedes show are cousins. They do not agree with each other, and they are not a reading order.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with Holly because that is the name you searched.
  • Starting with Never Flinch because it is newest.
  • Treating The Outsider as a standalone with no Holly cost.
  • Skipping If It Bleeds and then wondering why Holly talks as if a job already happened.
  1. Bill Hodges — If you want the trilogy page without the later books in the same table.
  2. Jack Reacher (Lee Child) — If you want another long crime list that flags its prequels.
  3. Cormoran Strike (Robert Galbraith) — If the point was a detective who gets more expensive book by book.
  4. Stephen King starter path — If you want single-volume King next.
  5. The Dark Tower — If you want the other long King path, which is not this one.
