In Death reading order (Naked in Death, 1995)

J. D. Robb is Nora Roberts on this series. The In Death novels are one numbered run, Eve Dallas in a near-future New York, and the count is past sixty. A full dump of every novel and anthology novella is a bibliography, not a starting path. This page is the starter: the first ten novels, where the novellas sit, and the rule for everything after.

Other Nora Roberts series are different shelves. They are not Eve book zero.

Starter path — first ten novels

Read them in this order. The cases are episodic. The partnership and the squad are not. Opening on a 2020s volume spends decades of that accumulation.

Novella, not novel 8: Midnight in Death (1998, in Silent Night) sits after Holiday in Death and before Conspiracy in Death. Optional. Later “… in Death” novellas in anthologies work the same way: they fit between novels on the author’s chronological list, and they are not a substitute for the next number.

Next novel after this table: Judgment in Death (2000). Then keep going in publication order. The author’s chronological PDF is the full braid of novels and novellas. This page does not retype it.

Remember When (2003) is a Nora Roberts novel with a linked Robb section. It is not an In Death number and it is not a second book one.

The latest novel on the author list when this page was checked is Fury in Death (2026). It is a late number. It is not where you start.

House rule: Naked in Death and then the numbers. Stop after the first ten if you wanted a sample of the voice. Do not start at Fury in Death, Stolen in Death, or whichever hardcover is in the new-release bay.

Common mistakes

• Starting at the newest in Death because the backlist looks impossible.
• Treating an anthology novella as the next novel, or as book one because the anthology is what the library owned.
• Reading Remember When as Eve Dallas book 1.
• Mixing a different Nora Roberts series into the numbers because the author photo matches.
• Skipping Naked in Death because a later book “can be read alone.” The plot of one case can. The shelf cannot.
