Hard on purpose, still book one

Gardens of the Moon (1999) drops you into a campaign already in motion. That is the method, not a printing error. Starting at a later “easier” book will not fix it; it will strand you on a different continent with the same expectation that you keep up.

The ten Book of the Fallen novels are one argument, in publication order: Gardens of the Moon, Deadhouse Gates, Memories of Ice, House of Chains, Midnight Tides, The Bonehunters, Reaper’s Gale, Toll the Hounds, Dust of Dreams, The Crippled God. Deadhouse Gates and Midnight Tides look like side trips. They are not optional. Dust of Dreams and The Crippled God are a split ending — read them back to back.

What not to open first

A circulating chronological list that puts prequels first is a timeline exercise, not a first-read syllabus. Kharkanas (Forge of Darkness onward) assumes you already care about people the ten introduce as myth. Esslemont’s Novels of the Malazan Empire overlap the ten; they are not Book of the Fallen 6.5, and Night of Knives is not an easier on-ramp.

If you want a long epic that explains itself as it goes, this is the wrong shop. Try Stormlight or Wheel of Time.
