Common question

Where to start Revelation Space

Start Revelation Space with the novel Revelation Space, then the inhibitor sequence. Chasm City and the Prefect books look like book one. They are not this door.

Short answer

Revelation Space

It is the first novel in the universe (2000) and the start of the inhibitor sequence. Chasm City and The Prefect look like book one. They are not this door.

The inhibitor sequence first

Reynolds says order is not critical, then immediately names Revelation Space, Redemption Ark, and Absolution Gap as the sequence that improves if you keep it. Inhibitor Phase continues that argument. That is the door.

Publication order across the whole universe is a valid history. It is not the kindest first read.

What is not this door

Chasm City is a related novel that looks like a start. The Prefect (and later Prefect books) are a different object in the same universe. They are not inhibitor book one. Do not postpone Revelation Space until you own a timeline chart.

FAQ

Can I start with Chasm City?
You can. You will be in the universe without the inhibitor sequence’s first argument.

Are the Prefect books required?
Not for the inhibitor novels.

Does Reynolds want chronological order?
He publishes a timeline. First read: Revelation Space onward in that sequence.
