Where to start The Dark Tower
Start The Dark Tower with The Gunslinger. Wind Through the Keyhole sits between books 4 and 5. Related King novels are optional, not homework.
Short answer
The Gunslinger
It is Dark Tower book one (1982; revised 2003). Do not start with The Wind Through the Keyhole. Do not start with The Stand because a chart said it is connected.
The seven, then Keyhole
Publication order is the Tower order: The Gunslinger through The Dark Tower. There is no honest “start at book five because the movie did.” Either Gunslinger text is book one; new printings are usually the 2003 revision.
The Wind Through the Keyhole (2012) sits between Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla. For a first read, insert it after book 4 if you already have it, or read the seven and then Keyhole. Do not start there. Do not postpone Roland until you own it.
Related King books are weather
Charts that require The Stand, ’Salem’s Lot, Insomnia, and the rest before Roland are doing spreadsheet energy in Maine. Those books reward a later reread. They are not Dark Tower 0.
If you wanted a first King without a quest, use the starter path. This page is only the Tower door.
