Where to start the Vorkosigan Saga
Start Vorkosigan with Shards of Honor, then Barrayar, then Miles. The Warrior’s Apprentice is the other honest door. Falling Free is not book one.

Bujold’s current guide favors Cordelia first: Shards of Honor, then Barrayar. The Warrior’s Apprentice is the other honest door if you want Miles immediately. Falling Free is about two centuries earlier. It is not either door.
Cordelia, then Miles
Shards of Honor (1986) is the series door this house uses. Barrayar was published later and sits the next day; it is not optional preamble you skip because you want Miles. The two are also sold as Cordelia’s Honor. Same novels.
The Warrior’s Apprentice is allowed if you insist on Miles first. You will meet Cordelia as history. Still read Shards and Barrayar before you are done. Do not skip ahead to Memory or start at Komarr.
What chronology charts get wrong
Internal chronology and publication order disagree. Bujold favors chronology with adjustments. Falling Free first because it is earliest is the usual trap: different century, different cast. Read it later; before Diplomatic Immunity if you want the quaddies first.
Ethan of Athos is a side novel. The Borders of Infinity collection is the tidy extra after The Warrior’s Apprentice. Neither is book one.
