The Warded Man
It is book one (2008). In the UK and Australia the same novel is The Painted Man. Then the four later novels. Novellas are optional bridges. Do not start on The Desert Spear because it opens with a new POV.
Five novels and four novellas. Brett published a binge-read order that weaves the novellas between the novels. The novels alone still carry the series. UK/US title split on book one is the other common trap.
The Desert Spear can be read without book one per Brett — he does not advise it. House rule: The Warded Man / The Painted Man first.

House rule: novels first if you want the shortest complete path. If you want Brett’s maximum-effect binge, insert the novellas where his guide places them: after Warded Man (Brayan’s Gold, Great Bazaar), after Daylight War (Messenger’s Legacy), and Barren with or after The Core.
Do not start the series on a novella because it is chronologically earlier.
Common mistakes
- Buying The Painted Man and The Warded Man as two different book ones.
- Starting with The Desert Spear because the new POV looks like a soft reboot.
- Treating the novellas as required homework before book one.
- Mixing The Nightfall Saga (later Brett world) into the Demon Cycle numbered list without checking.
