Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy in publication order, then The Book of Dust — prequels and sequels labeled so La Belle Sauvage is not book one of Lyra’s first path.

Northern Lights

US printings say The Golden Compass. Same first novel (1995). La Belle Sauvage is a later-published Book of Dust volume. Do not start there.

A finished trilogy, then a second sequence that looks backward and forward. Publication of His Dark Materials first is the house path.

The Book of Dust

TitleYearNotesShop
La Belle Sauvage2017Book of Dust 1. Prequel. After the trilogy for a first read.
The Secret Commonwealth2019Book of Dust 2. Later Lyra. After the trilogy.
The Rose Field2025Book of Dust 3. After the first two Dust volumes.

Contested order, labeled: chronological charts put La Belle Sauvage first. That path hands you Lyra’s earlier life before the trilogy earns it. House rule: Northern Lights → Subtle Knife → Amber Spyglass, then Dust if you want more.

Lyra’s Oxford, Once Upon a Time in the North, and Serpentine are extras. Optional after the trilogy. Not on-ramps.

The HBO / BBC series is a cousin. Show order is not a reason to start with Dust.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with La Belle Sauvage because it is “first.”
  • Mixing US and UK titles and thinking Golden Compass is a different book one.
  • Treating Dust as required homework before the trilogy.
  1. Narnia (C. S. Lewis) — If you want the other famous children’s-door sequence with a publication-versus-chronology fight. Pullman is in conversation with it; that is not a reading-order reason to start Narnia first.
  2. Harry Potter (J. K. Rowling) — If you want another long children’s-to-teen spine.
  3. Earthsea (Ursula K. Le Guin) — If you want another archipelago with later books that change the temperature.
  4. Old Kingdom (Garth Nix) — If you want another finished children’s-to-teen fantasy with a necromancer door and prequels that should stay later. Start at Sabriel (1995). The Amber Spyglass still closes the original three.
  5. [His Dark Materials, then Dust.] If you want the second sequence as aftercare.
