Old Kingdom reading order
Old Kingdom reading order: start with Sabriel. Clariel and Terciel and Elinor are later-published prequels, not book one. Creature in the Case labeled.

Short answer · Start here
Sabriel
It is the first published Old Kingdom novel (1995). Clariel and Terciel and Elinor are later-published prequels. They are not book one. The Creature in the Case is a novella, not a hidden novel 4.
The North American spine is often sold as Abhorsen. Same books. Publication order is the first-read path: meet the Charter, the bells, and the Wall the way Nix introduced them.
Boxed sets and “complete Old Kingdom” lists that open with Clariel are doing chronology. That is a reread toy.
The original three, then the bridge
| # | Title | Form | Year | Notes | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1995 | Start here. | Amazon search for Sabriel | ||
| 2 | 2001 | Fourteen years later. Not a new series. | Amazon search for Lirael | ||
| 3 | 2003 | Direct sequel to Lirael. Closes the first argument. | Amazon search for Abhorsen | ||
| 4 | Novella | 2005 | Also collected as Nicholas Sayre and the Creature in the Case. After Abhorsen; before Goldenhand. | Amazon search for The Creature in the Case |
Read Lirael and Abhorsen as one job. Stopping between them is how people lose the thread.
The Creature in the Case was a 2005 World Book Day volume, then collected in Across the Wall. It is a Nicholas Sayre story set just after the trilogy. House rule: if you want it, after Abhorsen and before Goldenhand. It is not optional homework, and it is not book one.
Sequel, then the labeled prequels
| # | Title | Year | Notes | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 2014 | Prequel, about six centuries earlier. Not book one. | Amazon search for Clariel | |
| 6 | 2016 | Direct sequel after Abhorsen and the novella. | Amazon search for Goldenhand | |
| 7 | 2021 | Prequel. Sabriel’s parents. Not book one. | Amazon search for Terciel and Elinor |
Contested order, labeled:
- Publication, with the novella before Goldenhand. This house’s first recommendation.
- Prequels last. Allowed. Clariel and Terciel and Elinor are richer once you already know what the Abhorsen line costs.
- Clariel first because it is earliest. Do not. It hands you a name the original three are built to meet later.
To Hold the Bridge is another Old Kingdom short, collected in a 2015 volume of the same name. Optional. Not a third prequel door.
Common mistakes
- Starting with Clariel because a chronological chart numbered it 1.
- Starting with Terciel and Elinor because it looks like a parents-and-origin story, therefore book one.
- Skipping The Creature in the Case and then wondering why Goldenhand assumes a Nicholas you have not seen since the trilogy — or treating the novella as a required fourth novel.
- Mixing in Shade’s Children or the Keys to the Kingdom shelf as if they were Old Kingdom.
What to read next
- Earthsea (Ursula K. Le Guin) — If you want another spare magic with a correct first book and later volumes that look like new doors.
- His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman) — If you want another finished three about a wall between worlds, then the later books labeled.
- Narnia (C. S. Lewis) — If you want the other children’s-looking door whose boxed set numbers a prequel as book one.
- The Folk of the Air (Holly Black) — If the Charter-and-courts temperature is what you came for.
- Stop after Abhorsen. The original three are a complete visit. Goldenhand is appetite, not homework.
