A Wizard of Earthsea

It is book one (1968). Later novels assume that first naming. Do not start with Tehanu. Do not start with The Other Wind.

Publication order is the Earthsea order. The later books change the conversation; they do not rewind it.

Short version of book one: Where to buy A Wizard of Earthsea. This page is the six.

The books

1A Wizard of EarthseaStart here1968Start here.
2The Tombs of Atuan1971
3The Farthest Shore1972Ends the original three.
4TehanuDo not start here1990Later novel. After the first three. Not an on-ramp.
5Tales from Earthsea2001Stories. After Tehanu if you want more.
6The Other Wind2001Closes the published novel run.

House rule: read the first three, then decide if you want the later Earthsea. Tehanu is written for people who already know the earlier islands. Tales from Earthsea includes pieces that look backward; it is still not book one.

The Studio Ghibli film is a cousin that rearranges. It is not a table of contents.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with Tehanu because it is the “grown-up” one.
  • Treating the first three as optional preamble.
  • Using the Ghibli film as book one.
  1. The Lord of the Rings (J. R. R. Tolkien) — If you want another older secondary world with extras that should stay extras.
  2. Narnia (C. S. Lewis) — If you want another children’s door with a contested later order.
  3. [A Wizard of Earthsea through The Farthest Shore, then stop.] The original three are a complete visit.
  4. Roots of Chaos (Samantha Shannon) — If you want dragons and institutions at a much longer length, with a prequel that should stay a prequel.
  5. Realm of the Elderlings (Robin Hobb) — If you want another long classic fantasy with one publication door and a second trilogy that looks like a new start. Start at Assassin’s Apprentice (1995), not Fool’s Assassin.
